The country's vibrant indigenous as well as colonial past is reflected in the capital city. Sri Lanka has traditionally been an important trading point for European commercial powers. The nation was a territory of the Netherlands, Portugal, and most notably the British, and their cultures blended well with the indigenous culture. These influences are tasted in the cuisine, seen in the buildings as well as arts, and felt in Colombo.
There are also museums to assist you to learn about Sri Lankan culture.
Kandy
Kandy is the place for learning about Sri Lankan history. Found in central Sri Lanka, it was the historic capital of the Sri Lankan royal family before colonisation. The National Museum of Kandy has displays and relics that tell the narrative of the area and its people. The temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is part of the official palace complex. Kandy Lake is a pleasant retreat from the city's heart. The lake is surrounded by shrines and temples. Kandy is completely surrounded, many of which are tea estates. Some provide tours and tea samples and the city is encircled by rain woods. The Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a city-owned woodland park. Galle Fort is a walled town containing boutique hotels, restaurants and shops. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The whole Fort area is a car-free zone. Aside from the mighty fort, the city has several excellent beaches. The vast sandy beaches merge with the brilliant blue seas. There is also a beach under the Galle lighthouse.
